The Enduring and Endearing Influence of Alexander McQueen
Quick: what does skulls, low rise jeans and couture all have in common? If you were drawing a blank then you are not a fan of any of the three nor could you possibly be a fan of the work of the late, great fashion designer Alexander McQueen. Born Lee Alexander McQueen, March 17, 1969, in Lewisham, London, McQueen, the youngest of six children knew what he wanted to do with his life and who he was right from the start. He was still a child when he started designing and making dresses for his three sisters, knowing that he would achieve his dreams and become a fashion designer for stars someday.
While you are putting together a list of items that would link back to Alexander McQueen you can add Bjork who used his work on the cover of her 1997 album “Homogenic”. he would then produce the music video to her song “Alarm Call” from that same album. Bjork was only one of the many celebrities that wore Alexander’s designs from the many lines he designed for including Givenchy where he served as the head designer for five years before striking out on his own.
Or you could lead the list off with one of the biggest names in the music business today, Lady GaGa, who not only wore a number of Alexander McQueen’s designs onstage during her elaborate shows but as one of her personal clothing choices as well. It was Lady GaGa who mentioned McQueen’s name during a 2010 performance following his death. She also spoke about him while accepting a number of awards at that same show.
Alexander McQueen used a number of recurring themes in his designs and set trends not only with his clothes but with the way that he presented them in his innovative, often shocking shows. Bumsters, the birth of the low rise jeans trend might be one of the items most often associated with McQueen by his fans. He also designed a shoe line for Puma and a makeup collection for MAC cosmetics. By the end of 2007, he had opened boutiques in London, New York, Los Angeles, Milan and Las Vegas.
Only forty at the time of his death in 2010, McQueen’s design lines will continue without his design presence which will be greatly missed by the fashion world.
